Droopy eyelids are one of the eye problems that cause many people to lose confidence because they make the face look tired and lifeless. This condition not only affects aesthetics but also causes inconvenience by hindering vision. Based on years of experience in aesthetics, HBIO Clinic will help you better understand the causes of droopy eyelids and help you choose effective solutions.
Dropy eyelids are a condition where the upper eyelid sags lower than its normal physiological position when looking straight ahead, making the eyes look smaller and less expressive. This condition can occur in one or both eyes with varying degrees of pupil coverage.
What is droopy eyelid?
Causes of Droopy Eyelids
Clearly identifying the cause of droopy eyelids will help you choose the right treatment method for the best results. Below are the main causes:
Due to Age
The aging process causes collagen and elastin to gradually decrease over time, causing the skin and supporting tissues of the eyelids to lose firmness. When the levator muscle weakens or is stretched, the upper eyelid easily sags, forming droopy eyelids.
This condition is often more noticeable in older people, those with thin skin around the eyes, dry skin, or a predisposition to premature aging. In addition, the habit of frequently rubbing the eyes also causes eyelids to sag faster.
Due to Eye Injury
Direct injuries to the eyelids, eye sockets, or ophthalmic surgery can damage the levator muscle. When the supporting structure is affected, the ability to open the eyelids is significantly reduced. In some cases, nerve injuries in the head can also affect the related eyelid muscles. This prevents the eyelids from lifting normally, leading to persistent ptosis (drooping eyelid).
Causes of Droopy Eyelids
Due to medical conditions
Several neurological and muscular disorders can cause ptosis (drooping eyelid), such as cranial nerve III palsy or Horner’s syndrome. These conditions are often accompanied by other abnormal eye manifestations.
In addition, myasthenia gravis is also a common cause of drooping eyelids, which worsens with fatigue. Treatment requires a combination of controlling the underlying disease and improving the aesthetics of the eye area.
Drops due to congenital causes
Congenital ptosis appears from birth or in the first few years of life due to incomplete development of the levator muscle. In many cases, muscle tissue is replaced by fibrous or fatty tissue.
If the upper eyelid covers the pupil, the child is at high risk of amblyopia (lazy eye) because vision is not adequately stimulated.
Due to failed invasive surgery
Some cosmetic surgeries to correct drooping eyelids or invasive interventions performed incorrectly can damage the levator muscle. This leads to uneven eyelids, drooping, and asymmetry between the two sides.
Besides technical factors, improper post-operative care can also increase the risk of complications.
Treatment Methods for Droopy Eyelids
Depending on the cause and severity, droopy eyelids can be improved using various methods or a combination of methods.
Eyelid Lifting Exercises
Wash your hands thoroughly. Use your thumb and index finger to gently place on the upper eyelid area, pressing and massaging in small circular motions. Then move your hands down to the lower eyelid and around the eye from the inside out.
Repeat these movements 5 times a day. After 4-8 weeks, the droopy eyelid condition will improve.
Eyelid Lifting Exercises
Facial Exercises
Gently close your eyes, keep your facial muscles relaxed, and slowly raise your eyebrows as high as possible. Hold this position for about 2-3 seconds, then slowly lower your eyebrows, avoiding frowning or using excessive force.
Repeat this exercise 10-15 times daily and maintain it for 3-6 weeks.

Eye Muscle Exercises
Close your eyes and raise your eyebrows like in a facial muscle exercise, then blink rapidly about 7 times. Next, close your eyes tightly for 5 seconds, then relax completely. Perform this exercise about 10 times a day for 4-6 weeks.
Temple Exercises
Place your fingertips on your forehead and gently massage in a circular motion for a few seconds. Move your hands to both temples, gently press and then continue stroking down to the cheekbones. Perform this regularly every day with moderate pressure. This exercise provides mild improvement; you should persevere for about 2-4 weeks to see results.

Treatment of the underlying condition
For cases of drooping eyelids related to an underlying medical condition, treating the root cause is the top priority. Once the underlying condition is controlled and stabilized, the drooping eyelids can be improved. The time it takes to improve the drooping eyelids will depend on the recovery time of the underlying condition.
The treating physician will conduct a comprehensive assessment to develop a suitable treatment plan, avoiding cosmetic intervention until the underlying condition is controlled.

Some cosmetic technologies to improve droopy eyelids that you can consider include:
Eyelid filler injections: This method uses hyaluronic acid fillers to add volume to the sunken or unsupported upper eyelid area. When the tissue is filled, the eyelids will look higher and more balanced.
This method is suitable for mild droopy eyelids due to aging. The cost of injections ranges from 4-6 million VND, depending on the type and dosage of filler used.
Eyelid Botox injections: Botox helps relax the muscles that pull the eyelids down, thereby supporting a natural and safe eyelid lift. The advantages of botox are that it is minimally invasive, provides quick results, and can be combined with many other natural methods.
The price for each eyelid botox injection is approximately 2-4 million VND, depending on the specific droopy eyelid condition and the desired level of improvement.
Eyelid thread lift: This solution lifts the eyelids by creating anchor points to support the soft tissue. Biodegradable threads stimulate collagen production and keep the eyelids in a normal, elevated position. The advantages of this method are that it is minimally invasive, has a quick recovery time, and leaves few scars.
A thread lift procedure for the eye area costs between 20-30 million VND. This price may be higher if you want a full eye lift treatment.
